Garth Wells Freddie Mac Multifamily Asset Management All Star

Garth Wells was born in Daytona Beach, Florida and grew up in Greenbelt, Maryland. His family’s background is rooted in the construction industry, with two grandfathers who are engineers — which has influenced his career journey. Garth currently resides in Kent Island, Maryland with his wife of 20 years (in August 2025) and their three children.

Garth attended Salisbury University where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in finance. He worked as a sales representative for Ryland Homes to help pay for his schooling. After graduation, Garth landed a role as a commercial mortgage broker with a focus on loan origination and underwriting. As his interest in the mortgage industry grew, he moved on to work for CRIIMI MAE Services Limited Partnership where he met many colleagues who he still works with to this day. In that role, Garth traveled all over the United States performing property inspections, asset management and B-piece underwriting. He then took a position as the deputy director of finance at a private company located in Bethesda, Maryland, leading a team that supported the affordable and student housing side of the business. While there, Garth's job was impacted by the 2008 financial crisis, so he transitioned to working as a consultant — lending support to restructuring construction loans for various development companies.

In 2009, Garth joined Freddie Mac on the Multifamily Structured Transactions team as a professional analyst. With his strong background, knowledge of the commercial real estate industry and passion for housing supply, all things aligned. Fifteen years later and Garth now serves as a director of the Structured Transactions team. Below, he shares what makes working at Freddie Mac so special and why he has continued to work here for much of his career.

What do you like most about working at Freddie Mac?

A: I appreciate that each day always brings something different. In my role, I’m able to work with a variety of loan products, which yields engaging work and the opportunity for continuous learning. It also means that I get to work cross-functionally with different teams from the Multifamily division so I get to meet and get to know new people all the time.

What trait makes a great teammate?

A: There are several traits but one that certainly comes to mind is flexibility, in the sense of showing a desire to learn, interest in trying new things and adaptability in how the person works. My team supports around 23 debt/equity products, so the more people who learn about each one of them, the greater experience they’ll build, which is crucial for delivering results and supporting the team.

What do you like about your job or what gets you excited to come to work?

A: Solving problems! It’s a fun challenge every day to resolve issues related to each of the loan products I’m involved in and especially for the outcome of helping to make affordable housing possible.

What are your hobbies outside of work?

A: I am an avid sailboat racer. My passion for racing started when I was a child and my parents signed me up for sailing camp, which at the time I was ironically not happy about. However, they told me that if I went, I could pick the location of our next family vacation. I chose Bermuda, and this opened my eyes to the world and joys of sailboat racing. Since then, I have been racing for over 25 years — sailboats ranging in all sizes and from manning the bow to driving the boat. I’ve raced multiple times in the Key West Race Week and twice from Annapolis, Maryland to Bermuda. I have also taught my children how to race sailboats and currently coach one of them. It’s great to be able to share this with my family.
