April is Financial Literacy Month and a good reminder of the importance of financial education. A strong understanding of personal finance helps us all manage our resources, plan for the future and achieve important financial goals. Whether you’re a renter or a multifamily operator who wants to provide access to financial tools for your tenants, here are a variety of free renter resources — at your fingertips.

CreditSmart®: Our robust, online education platform helps people build their financial capabilities. CreditSmart’s Renter Resources offer interactive tools and self-guided lessons on a variety of topics such as Understanding Your Income, Managing Debt, Renting a Home and so much more. It’s available in multiple languages, including English, Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese and Korean. Access it here online.

Renter Resource Organizations (RROs): Across the country, we work with nonprofits that specialize in housing services for renters in their local communities. By equipping renters with the right tools and resources, these organizations help renters prepare for the future — including preparing for the next move, finding the right apartment within a budget, lowering the risk of eviction and so much more. They provide a variety of support and can be promoted through lenders to property owners all the way to the tenant.

Our National Renter Helpline: Renters who live outside of the areas current RROs serve can call 800-404-3097. HUD-certified housing counselors will provide renters free assistance with issues regarding budget and debt management — as well as credit counseling and other educational resources.

We encourage lenders, sponsors and multifamily operators to connect renters with these important resources. By supporting the financial capability of renters, you’re helping to support a stronger multifamily industry.
