A Winding Road Leads Back Home
Dan Din is our Senior Director of Underwriting for the Southeast Region.
Dan has been with Freddie Mac for almost 12 years – but housing finance wasn’t always in the stars for him. After growing up in Chantilly, VA and getting his undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia, he pursued his masters at George Washington University and MBA in Real Estate at Johns Hopkins while working as a fashion buyer for a local department store. The constant travel to New York took its toll.
Dan briefly dipped his toes into the world of high fashion, but then pivoted to strategy consulting at IBM in New York. However, he felt the pull to return home, so he came back to Virginia and threw his hat in the mortgage finance ring with Freddie Mac. Our mission and social impact in addressing housing affordability felt like the right fit.
After starting in Investments & Capital Markets under the cloud of conservatorship, and a brief stint in Single Family, Dan moved over to Multifamily to work on new products. He enjoyed the experience in new product development but wanted to work on in the trenches on the front lines, so he made a big decision – to bet on himself.
He took a step down in title from manager to analyst, so he could work as part of the CME underwriting team. He worked to create and run Manufactured Housing Communities and our Mod Rehab product as well as other specialty products, prior to taking over as head of credit for the Southeast region.
His gamble paid off.
Now, Dan spends his days fighting for affordable housing – and to stay ahead of his 5- and 3-year old kids. Instead of taking to the soccer field himself, which he played well into adulthood, he now gets to watch his kids learn the game he loves with a smile on his face – all in a day’s work.
